About Position/Job
Durham University is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Archaeology and Agent-Based Modelling within its world-leading Department of Archaeology. This two-year ERC-funded role is part of the project Science, Society and Environmental Change in the First Millennium CE (SSE1K), led at Durham by Professor Dan Lawrence in collaboration with international partners in Venice, Basel, and Tübingen. The postholder will focus on social-ecological systems in the Mediterranean, particularly Central and Southern Italy, using advanced agent-based modelling (ABM) techniques supported by Durham’s high-performance computing services. The position offers the opportunity to engage in publications, international collaboration, and interdisciplinary research at the intersection of archaeology, history, and climate studies, while contributing to one of the UK’s top-ranked departments.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD (or near completion) in Archaeology or a related discipline
- Strong experience in agent-based modelling design and delivery
- Evidence of high-quality research and publications
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals
- Experience supervising students or research assistants
- Background in socio-ecological modelling over time
- Ability to develop collaborative research proposals
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct independent and collaborative research using agent-based modelling
- Publish in leading peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences
- Contribute to the development of new methods and project objectives
- Support team members with mapping, spatial analysis, and dissemination activities
- Participate in training, supervision, and wider departmental citizenship
