Research Assistant Position in the Project Locally Crafted Empires (LoCiS) at Aarhus University, Denmark

About the Position

Aarhus University invites applications for a Research Assistant (fixed-term contract) in the project Locally Crafted Empires: Intersecting identities under Imperial rule in Western Asia as expressed in local portrait cultures (1st c. BCE–5th c. CE) — also known as LoCiS. Led by Professor Rubina Raja, this interdisciplinary initiative explores local portrait traditions and identity formation across Western Asia under various imperial powers. The successful candidate will contribute to innovative research in classical archaeology and ancient history, supporting data management, analysis, and publication processes. This role offers the opportunity to join a dynamic team at the School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, and participate in an internationally oriented project that reveals how artistic expressions shaped and reflected cultural identities in antiquity.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • MA in Classical Archaeology, Ancient History, or a related discipline
  • Proven expertise in archaeology and the cultural heritage of the Near East and Western Asia
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of modern languages such as French, German, or Italian
  • Experience in editorial work, copyediting, and data management
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative abilities
  • Prior experience in similar research support roles

Key Responsibilities

  • Support research and publication projects, including copyediting and indexing
  • Conduct data collection, management, and analysis under supervision
  • Perform literature reviews and image processing related to classical archaeology
  • Assist in preparing funding applications and reports for funding agencies
  • Collaborate with the project leader and research team in ongoing LoCiS initiatives
