About the Position
The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) at the University of Chicago invites applications for a one-year funded position as an AI and Geospatial Developer specialising in archaeology, history, and cultural heritage. This hybrid role in Chicago, Illinois offers an exciting opportunity to develop open-source geospatial AI workflows that will transform how researchers analyse historical satellite imagery and environmental data. Working alongside archaeologists, GIS specialists, and remote sensing experts, the selected candidate will contribute to innovative digital research bridging artificial intelligence and heritage science. The project aims to build sustainable, reproducible digital tools for understanding human–environment interactions across time. The position may be extended based on funding availability.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2–5 years of relevant experience
- Proven programming experience in Python, including libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, and GeoPandas
- Knowledge of machine learning frameworks (Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch) and geospatial tools (GDAL, OTB)
- Experience with Git, Docker, and collaborative code development
Preferred Qualifications:
- Open-source development experience
- Familiarity with cloud architectures (OpenStack, Kubernetes) and HPC environments
- Background in remote sensing, geospatial AI, and data pipeline design
- Understanding of cross-disciplinary collaboration in digital humanities or heritage science
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement AI/MLOps pipelines for geospatial data
- Manage data infrastructure (cloud/on-prem) for remote sensing applications
- Develop reproducible workflows for processing and visualising historical satellite imagery
- Collaborate with archaeologists, geographers, and data scientists to develop open-source tools
- Maintain clear documentation and ensure quality control for all outputs
