About the Position
The School of Humanities at Macquarie University, Sydney, invites applications for a Gale Research Fellow in Papyrology. This full-time, 12-month fixed-term post offers an exciting opportunity to study and catalogue the extensive Macquarie papyrus collection—the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. The Research Fellow will work closely with the Gale History Museum and the Faculty of Arts, engaging in the study, conservation, and digital cataloguing of Greek and Coptic papyri. The role supports innovative provenance research and public engagement, contributing to the University’s leadership in ancient history and museum studies. This fellowship, supervised by Associate Professor Malcolm Choat, offers a chance to develop research excellence while advancing cultural heritage preservation.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in cataloguing and conservation of papyri
- Experience in museum collections management or collaboration within the GLAM sector
- Record of public engagement and outreach in research contexts
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed study and provenance analysis of the Macquarie papyri
- Catalogue and conserve Greek and Coptic manuscripts
- Develop a digital portal for the collection, integrating images and metadata
- Publish research on the collection’s history and significance
- Collaborate with museum professionals and external stakeholders
- Contribute to public engagement and research dissemination
