About the Programme
The Cluster of Excellence ROOTS at Kiel University, Germany, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Prehistoric Archaeology focused on “Conflict Resolution – Boundaries and Communal Places as De-escalation Measures.” This doctoral research investigates how prehistoric communities in Europe (2000–500 BC) managed conflicts and maintained social cohesion through spatial and cultural boundaries. Integrating archaeology, GIS, topographical studies, and geophysical surveys, the project aims to uncover long-term patterns of cooperation and conflict management. The selected researcher will work within the Subcluster “Conflict: Contextualising Past Comportment” under the ROOTS Cluster of Excellence, fostering collaboration across archaeology, environmental sciences, and the humanities. This position provides international research exposure, interdisciplinary training, and strong academic mentorship, making it an excellent opportunity for early-career scholars in archaeology and historical studies.
