About Position/Job
The University of Kiel invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in “Quantification and Qualification of Socio-environmental Hazards in Prehistoric Societies” within the Cluster of Excellence ROOTS. This role, starting July 2026, offers a unique opportunity to study human-environment interactions and related hazards from the Late Glacial period onwards. The successful candidate will engage in interdisciplinary research combining geosciences, paleoecology, and physical geography, using geospatial and numerical modelling techniques to investigate climate-induced coastal hazards and socio-economic vulnerabilities across the Northern Sea, Baltic Sea, and Mediterranean coastal regions. The project integrates archaeological data, quantitative proxies, and model simulations, contributing to the ROOTS overarching research goals. This post provides an exceptional platform for international collaboration, fieldwork, and high-end research infrastructure in the upcoming ARCWorlds research building.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Outstanding PhD in Geosciences, Physical Geography, Environmental Sciences, or related disciplines
- Proven experience in geospatial or numerical modelling
- Familiarity with field and laboratory geoscientific proxy data
- Ability to engage in interdisciplinary, international research projects and fieldwork
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in archaeological data integration
- Prior involvement in regional or international socio-environmental studies
Key Responsibilities
- Integrate, assess, and evaluate variables influencing human-environment interactions and hazards
- Apply geospatial and numerical methods to study coastal hazards and vulnerability
- Collaborate actively with ROOTS subclusters and overarching research initiatives
- Contribute to international and interdisciplinary research publications
- Participate in fieldwork and model simulations
