About the Program

The University of Exeter offers a fully funded PhD studentship in Mapping Geohazard Proximity and Risk Trends Around UNESCO Sites starting September 2026. Supervised by Dr Milto Miltiadou from the Department of Computer Science, this interdisciplinary project combines geospatial analysis, machine learning, and heritage conservation to assess risks from earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, wildfires, and droughts near UNESCO Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves, and GeoParks. The project allows flexibility to focus on natural or cultural sites and incorporate diverse remote sensing datasets. Students will develop predictive models, anomaly detection, uncertainty quantification, and interactive GIS visualisations. This opportunity is part of the NERC GW4+ Doctoral Training Partnership, offering an internationally collaborative environment and hands-on experience in environmental risk assessment, supporting the conservation of globally significant heritage sites.
