About Position/Job
The School of English and Digital Humanities at University College Cork invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Viking Studies & Digital Humanities to lead the Politics & Identity strand of NorseMap: Mapping the Reception and Legacy of the Vikings in Europe, a 5-year ERC-funded project. This full-time role focuses on analysing political uses of the Viking past across Europe, integrating citizen science data, examining online extremism, ethnonationalism, disinformation, and historical appropriations of Viking identity. The researcher will compare Scandinavian and broader European contexts, with emphasis on Eastern Europe, while contributing to public engagement, ethnographic methods, and data-driven analysis. This position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team exploring cultural memory, digital humanities, political communication, and historical reception studies.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in Old Norse–Viking Studies, Politics, or a related discipline
- Research experience in politicisation of the Viking past, ethnonationalism, extremist discourse, online political engagement, or disinformation
- Experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis of medium-to-large datasets
- Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in a research team
- Commitment to professional development, grant writing and dissemination
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in a European language, especially Scandinavian languages, Polish or Ukrainian
- Experience with Viking reception in Eastern Europe
- Familiarity with virtual ethnography and participant observation
- Prior experience conducting online surveys
- Public engagement experience
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Politics & Identity research strand of the NorseMap project
- Conduct independent and collaborative research under the Principal Investigator
- Collect, analyse and integrate political-use data across European contexts
- Develop case studies and contribute to mapping the Viking legacy
- Produce a research monograph as part of the project
- Engage with the public and support citizen science data collection
- Support postgraduate students and wider research activities
- Assist with grant writing, project administration and dissemination
