About the Program
The University of Birmingham is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in Palaeontology. The PhD in The Nature, Importance and Protection of British Vertebrate Fossil Track Sites (2026-B10) offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the scientific value and conservation of UK fossil trackways. Funded through CENTA and NERC, this project focuses on vertebrate trace fossils spanning the Devonian to the Holocene across the United Kingdom. The research will examine site distribution, palaeobiological significance, and long-term protection strategies using fieldwork, digital recording, photogrammetry, and conservation science. Supervised by Prof. Kirsty Edgar, the project aligns closely with environmental and palaeontological research priorities and is delivered in collaboration with Natural England, providing strong interdisciplinary and applied research experience.
