About the Position
Aarhus University, Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, invites applications for a 21-month postdoctoral position in radiocarbon dating and Bayesian modelling. This exciting role is part of the major research project “Milestone”, led by Associate Professor Sarah Croix, which explores transformative archaeological developments at the burial site of Lindholm Høje during the first millennium CE. The position blends laboratory work, archaeological analysis, interdisciplinary collaboration and advanced chronological modelling. This postdoc contributes directly to understanding social change, burial practices, and temporal developments using scientific archaeology, stratigraphy, and multi-institutional research methods. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in archaeology, bioarchaeology, or a directly related field
- Documented experience in chronology and archaeological temporal analysis
- Strong expertise in radiocarbon dating methods
- Ability to interpret chronological datasets
- Excellent written and spoken English
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Bayesian modelling (OxCal or similar)
- Knowledge of burial archaeology in Northwestern Europe
- Research experience with first-millennium CE materials
- Laboratory experience with bone sample preparation
- Ability to collaborate across institutions
- Motivation to learn Danish (if not already proficient)
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct radiocarbon analyses following international scientific and ethical standards
- Model and refine the site chronology of Lindholm Høje using Bayesian methods
- Integrate radiocarbon results with stratigraphic and artefact-based evidence
- Collaborate with project partners across Denmark and Europe
- Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to the site monograph
- Present findings at international academic conferences
- Co-organise two research workshops at Aarhus University
- Participate in departmental activities, seminars and meetings
- Contribute minimal teaching as agreed with the department
