About Position/Job
Aalto University, Finland, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Remote Sensing of Peatlands to join the newly established Center of Excellence in Peatlands, Climate Change and Ecological Restoration (PeatResC). This three-year postdoctoral position, funded by the Research Council of Finland, is expected to start in spring 2026. The successful candidate will be based at Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus and will work under the supervision of Professor Miina Rautiainen, collaborating with international partners from the University of Eastern Finland, Finnish Meteorological Institute, and University of Helsinki.
The position focuses on developing novel remote sensing methods to monitor northern peatlands, addressing key questions on climate change impacts, biodiversity, and large-scale restoration efforts. The research combines environmental science, geosciences, and computational remote sensing, involving both field campaigns and satellite data analysis. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact interdisciplinary research, collaborate internationally, and gain experience in teaching and student supervision.

Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD in a relevant field
- Strong understanding of remote sensing principles
- Experience in developing satellite-based remote sensing methods
- First-author publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Advanced data analysis and programming skills
- Excellent teamwork, communication, and English language skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of peatland ecosystems
- Fieldwork experience in remote environments
- Experience with high-performance computing
- Valid Finnish driving licence
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and analyse novel remote sensing methods to monitor peatland water table dynamics and biophysical properties
- Conduct extended field campaigns, including remote and logistically demanding sites
- Collaborate with the PeatResC consortium and international partners
- Participate in teaching and student supervision
- Contribute to high-impact publications and research reports
