About the Program
University of Basel invites applications for a fully-funded PhD in Provincial Roman Archaeology titled “Assistant to the Vindonissa Professorship for Provincial Roman Archaeology (60%)” at the Department of Classical Studies, Faculty of Arts and History. This doctoral position focuses on the academic qualification of candidates through a dissertation project while participating in teaching, student supervision, and the research activities of the Vindonissa Professorship. The research addresses key processes in Provincial Roman Archaeology, including interdisciplinary excavation, archival documentation, and public archaeology events. The project will be supervised in collaboration with the Vindonissa Professorship team and aligns with the department’s focus on classical studies, archaeology, and interdisciplinary methods. Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, Prehistory and Early History, or Archaeology and Natural Sciences with a focus on Provincial Roman Archaeology
- Willingness to work closely with related disciplines and Swiss cantonal archaeology
- Very good knowledge of German and Latin, with passive skills in Italian, French, and English
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in interdisciplinary excavation and research projects
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
- Experience in teaching and student supervision
