About the Program
VID Specialised University invites applications for up to five fully funded PhD Research Fellowships in Theology and Religion at the Centre for the Study of World Christianity and Religion. These three-year fellowships aim to develop doctoral researchers with expertise in World Christianity, indigenous perspectives, and contextual theology. Research projects may focus on Sámi, Kven, or Forest Finn church history, mission and archival studies, biblical studies, or ecotheology, integrating interdisciplinary methods and global perspectives. PhD candidates will receive research training, mentorship, and the opportunity to collaborate with international institutions. The fellowships are based in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, or Tromsø, Norway, starting January 2027 or by agreement. Successful candidates will contribute to the academic goals of VID while gaining professional development for careers in research, teaching, and leadership within religious organisations.

Research Focus/Area
- Sámi, Kven, or Forest Finn church history
- Constructive or practical theology, reconciliation, colonialism, decolonisation
- Mission history, archival research, and glocal dynamics of Christianity
- Biblical studies with indigenous, contextual, or postcolonial approaches
- Ecotheology, climate, sustainability, and church engagement
Eligibility & Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree (120 ECTS) in Theology, Religious Studies, History of Religion, Comparative Religion, Sociology of Religion, Anthropology of Religion, Psychology of Religion, or other relevant disciplines
- Minimum grade B or higher for the Master’s thesis
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
- Ability to work independently and manage large tasks
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous research experience in theology or religion
- Experience collaborating in interdisciplinary or international research
- Knowledge of archival methods, fieldwork, or community-based research
