About Position/Job

The University of Cambridge is inviting applications for the role of Project Manager (Grade I) at the Cambridge Archaeological Unit (CAU), part of the Department of Archaeology. This full-time, permanent position focuses on the management and delivery of archaeological research and commercial fieldwork projects across East Anglia, England, covering prehistoric, Iron Age, Roman, and urban archaeological sites.
The role is central to ensuring high-quality archaeological outcomes, from initial client engagement and tendering through fieldwork, post-excavation analysis, reporting, publication, and archiving. As a member of the CAU Management Team, the Project Manager contributes to the Unit’s strategic objectives while upholding national and regional archaeological standards, health and safety requirements, and environmental sustainability policies. The position is ideal for experienced archaeology professionals seeking a leadership role within a globally recognised research institution.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree-level education in Archaeology or a closely related discipline with significant practical excavation experience
  • In-depth knowledge of British archaeology and commercial fieldwork practice
  • Strong understanding of archaeological planning processes in England
  • Demonstrable experience delivering fieldwork and post-excavation projects
  • Experience in budget-setting, tendering, invoicing, and project timetabling
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Health and Safety in the archaeological fieldwork
  • Clean UK/EU driving licence
  • Valid CIfA membership and SSSTS qualification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven line management or mentoring experience
  • Experience managing projects through all stages to publication and archiving

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage archaeological projects from client contact to final publication
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to required standards
  • Lead and coordinate archaeological teams across multiple sites
  • Oversee health, safety, and environmental compliance
  • Contribute to the strategic management and objectives of the CAU
