About the Program

The S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS), an autonomous research institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, invites applications for its PhD Programmes in Physical, Chemical, and Biological Sciences for the academic year 2025-2026. The Centre offers a fully residential program with on-campus accommodations and boarding facilities. Students will register with a Research Supervisor and undertake prescribed coursework. The doctoral degree will be awarded based on PhD registration made in the University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University, or Presidency University, West Bengal.

Research Focus

Astrophysics & High Energy Physics: Star formation, spectroscopic studies, black hole physics, quantum information theory, string theory.
Chemical & Biological Sciences: Biophysical chemistry, LASER spectroscopy, biomedical optics, nanophotonics, biophysics, computational biology.
Condensed Matter & Material Sciences: Materials physics, spintronics, quantum technology, resistive memory devices.
Physics of Complex Systems: Quantum information theory, statistical physics, mesoscopic physics, biological physics.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in relevant disciplines with First Class/Division (minimum 60%; 55% for reserved categories).
Valid scores in national level tests such as CSIR-NET-JRF, UGC-NET-JRF, GATE, NBHM, INSPIRE, UGC-MANF, UGC-NFSC, or UGC-NFOBC with award letters valid up to September 2025.
