About Position/Job

The Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at the University of São Paulo (MAE-USP) is offering one Postdoctoral Fellowship in Archaeobotany and Paleoecology as part of the FAPESP-funded project “Voices of the Indigenous Amazon: historical processes of sociobiodiversity in the face of the challenges of the Anthropocene”. Led by Dr Jennifer Watling, this research aims to uncover ancient agricultural and forest management practices in the Xingu Indigenous Territory through phytolith and paleoecological analyses.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-impact project integrating Indigenous collaboration, scientific analysis, and heritage protection in the Brazilian Amazon.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Archaeobotany, Paleoecology, or a related field
  • Fluency in Portuguese
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Proven experience with phytolith analysis
  • Capacity for field and laboratory work
  • Willingness to engage with Indigenous researchers and community partners

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in interdisciplinary, community-based, or collaborative research
  • Background in soil analysis, charcoal analysis, or radiocarbon dating

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead paleoecological and archaeobotanical field sampling
  • Analyze phytoliths, charcoal, soils, and conduct C-14 dating
  • Collaborate with the Kuikuro Indigenous Association and Vozes research team
  • Co-produce educational materials
  • Respect data sovereignty and Indigenous intellectual rights
  • Teach one course (graduate or extension) at MAE-USP
