About Position/Job

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) is inviting applications for two project-based research roles — Principal Project Associate (PPA) and Junior Research Fellow (JRF) — under the DST-funded project “Low-cost Disaster & Emergency Services for Communication At Risk (LODESTAR)”, led by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. The project is interdisciplinary, aiming to develop actionable disaster communication systems grounded in hydrological and community-based research. The positions offer the opportunity to work with social scientists, engineers, and policy stakeholders.

  • Salary Range:
    • PPA: ₹49,000 + 18% HRA/month
    • JRF: ₹37,000 + HRA for 2 years; ₹42,000 + HRA in the 3rd year
  • Required Degree/Diploma
    • Principal Project Associate (PPA): PhD
    • Junior Research Fellow (JRF): Master’s degree in Sociology / Geography / English / Anthropology

Research Areas

  • Disaster communication and early warning systems
  • Hydrological modelling and flood forecasting
  • Community-based risk analysis

  • Data analysis using Python, R, or MATLAB

Eligibility & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • PPA:
    • Relevant degree + required years of experience
    • Prior work on hydrological tools such as HEC-RAS, SWAT, MIKE SHE
  • JRF:
    • Postgraduate degree in relevant social science discipline
    • Qualified NET/GATE

Preferred Qualifications

  • PPA:
    • Strong background in modelling, scripting, and field data interpretation
    • Publications or reports in water/climate modelling or risk communication
  • JRF:
    • Field research experience
    • Experience in qualitative documentation and academic writing

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out hydrological modelling for flood forecasting
  • Integrate climate and risk data using technical software
  • Coordinate project tasks with other science and policy teams
  • Support report writing and project management
  • Conduct interviews, FGDs, and document field activities
  • Assist with qualitative research and literature review
  • Contribute to writing academic and project reports
  • Liaise with partner institutions and assist in internal communication
